Book Tour Squirrels in Antarctica

Are squirrels the new “it” animal?

By Sari Karplus

While being the titular creatures, squirrels are, in fact, just one of the 30+ animal characters found within the pages of this book. Each page introduces a new animal in a new wacky place, no two combinations are the same! Since squirrels are found on every continent except Antarctica, they seemed the perfect animal to represent this concept.

Through fun and entertaining illustrations, the reader is taught a delightful game, which can be played almost anywhere at any time. Will you find a porcupine in Paris, or a blobfish in Spain? Would a turtle tap dancing in outer space be unexpected? The more surprising the combination, the better!

Readers are encouraged to play along and think of an animal in a place one normally wouldn’t find them. For example, a narwal in New York, or a skiing seal in Switzerland. We start with some simple combinations, and the book gets more imaginative as you go.

After reading Squirrels in Antarctica, the reader will walk away thinking of their own silly combinations of animals and places. It’s a great activity to do with friends and family of all ages. More importantly, this book sets out to spark creativity. This sort of exercise in imagination will help readers practice the key ingredients of problem-solving and invention. Innovation relies on using your imagination to combine familiar things in new and unexpected ways.

The best part about the Squirrels in Antarctica game is that there’s no winner or loser. Playing is simply brainstorming. So if you’re feeling squirrely, grab a friend and start making up combos!

Thank you Sari for this fun guest post! Your book is so adorable. My son and I loved reading it and combining our own silly combinations.
