WILLOW meets SAVING PRIVATE RYAN Weaving fantasy, horror, and action adventure, END AFTER END: At the Moment of Your Death tells the genre-blending, soul-bending story about how one man’s life – and death – impacts all of existence, time after time … without end. IT NEVER ENDS Life is nothing if not a series of endings. School. Jobs. Friendships. Love. Walter Willem's death was fast and unexpected. His was an unremarkable life. So, how is it that his story continues as cannon fodder in an endless war waged against an insatiable darkness hellbent on consuming all of existence? Walt Willem is dead. When he awakens in the End After End he must survive being dropped face-first into the midst of an endless war. Unsatisfied by the artistic pursuits of his former life, Walt believes he's been summoned to the End After End to collect a set of ancient relics and reignite the power of a long dormant warrior who will vanquish the all-consuming Ulc. At last Walt believes, he will finally be fulfilled. Walt is going to learn to redefine what it is to be a hero. Being a hero doesn’t mean saving the world all at once. A hero can be forged in small steps, taking the tiniest measures – the smallest acts resonate throughout the universe, changing the course of lives. Over, and over, and over again… Volume 1 collects issues #1-5 From acclaimed writers David DB Andry (Resonant) and Tim Daniel (The Plot, Fissure, Walking Dead: The Survivor's Guide) and in-demand artist Sunando C comes the story of one seemingly unremarkable man – whose afterlife explodes with the impact it sets in motion. I give END AFTER END Vol. 1: At the Moment of your Death ⭐⭐⭐!

Wow, this was one trippy story. So the main character, Walt Willem, dies by taking a picture of a locust. As he takes the photo he trips, falls, and is hit by a train.

Then he hears shouting, cries of despair, and looks over as the head of a man is ripped off his body.

Soon, a dwarf, like from J.R.R. Tolkien, with fairy-like wings called Grink, tells him to get up and fight. Walt soon learns that Grink is his guide in this new world where he fights these creatures under the direction of the Catha. An endless battle, where hardly anyone survives.

That is the short version of the story, and here are my thoughts. I loved the plot and story premise, Walt dies and is transported into this world where he must fight or he will die - for real. It reminds me of many animes, such as Sword Art Online. This volume is setting up the story and gives some backstory about Walt. Who he was on earth, such as he was an artist, his heartbreak, and disappointments. This is very well done and I have a feeling it will mean something or will be crucial to the plot in future volumes.

So to be honest I was confused and had to reread several pages to understand what was happening. Also, the dwarf fairy, Grink, had a Celtic or Irish accent and it was hard to understand what he was saying.

I did love the scenes when he finally ran away from Grink and the war party and seeks out solitude. There he meets a creature who he soon learns is human and finds out that people arrive with the fairy people or the Wreeks. Of course, this man arrived with the Wreeks and survived them but must kill so he won't be killed or eaten by them. So this was an interesting part of the story and I enjoyed it very much. It added some more mystery to this new world.

Other than this scene, the illustrations. They have so much detail and I love the color choices when switching from scenes in the past and what's happening currently.

So, if you love SWORD ART ONLINE mixed with the TWILIGHT ZONE then you'll love END AFTER END and it will be the perfect fit!
