My Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Gabriella Batel's "Don't" is a heart-pounding thriller that hooks you from the very first page and refuses to let go. If you’re a fan of nail-biting suspense and a storyline that makes your pulse race, this book is definitely for you. Batel masterfully crafts an atmosphere where everyone seems suspicious, keeping readers constantly on edge, wondering who to trust.

The Plot

Paityn, the protagonist, is a young woman battling near-terminal lupus, a condition that keeps her awake and hyper-aware of her surroundings. This heightened awareness leads her to a dangerous reunion with Tony Suarez, a man with a dark past connected to her family. The intensity of the book skyrockets as Paityn becomes the sole witness to a crime she wasn't meant to see.

Tony Suarez, the antagonist, is a figure shrouded in menace and malice. The first time Tony entered Paityn's life, he shot her stepfather. Now, he's back, determined to silence Paityn by any means necessary. His strategy? To threaten and harm her family, knowing that Paityn's love for them is her greatest vulnerability.

Characters

Paityn is a remarkably resilient character. Despite her illness, she is determined, strong, and fiercely protective of her family. Her fight against both her illness and Tony's threats is the driving force of the story. Batel does an excellent job of portraying Paityn's inner strength and vulnerability, making her a relatable and sympathetic character.

Tony Suarez is the perfect villain—calculating, ruthless, and relentless. His presence looms large throughout the novel, creating a constant sense of danger. Every encounter with Tony is fraught with tension, and his unpredictability keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

Suspense and Pacing

One of the most impressive aspects of "Don't" is its pacing. Batel strikes a perfect balance between intense action scenes and moments of quieter, emotional depth. This balance ensures that the story never feels rushed, yet it maintains a relentless pace that makes it difficult to put the book down. Every chapter ends with a tantalizing hook, compelling you to keep reading.

The suspense is palpable, with every character seeming to have secrets and hidden motives. This pervasive sense of distrust adds layers of complexity to the plot, as readers are constantly guessing who might be in league with Tony or who might betray Paityn. Batel’s skillful plotting and pacing ensure that the tension never lets up, right until the dramatic climax.

Themes

"Don't" delves into themes of family, loyalty, and survival. Paityn’s love for her family drives her to take incredible risks, and her journey is as much about protecting them as it is about confronting her own fears and limitations. The novel also explores the impact of chronic illness on an individual’s life, portraying Paityn’s struggles with lupus with sensitivity and realism.

Writing Style

Gabriella Batel's writing style is crisp and engaging, with a keen eye for detail that brings scenes vividly to life. Her ability to convey emotion through action and dialogue is particularly noteworthy. The prose is straightforward yet evocative, creating a reading experience that is both immersive and intense.

Final Thoughts

"Don't" by Gabriella Batel is a must-read for fans of suspenseful thrillers. With its gripping plot, well-developed characters, and relentless tension, it’s a book that will keep you up late into the night, unable to stop turning the pages. Batel has crafted a story that is as emotionally resonant as it is thrilling, making "Don't" a standout in the genre.

If you're looking for a book that will grab you from the first page and refuse to let go, "Don't" is the perfect choice. It's an intense, suspenseful ride that will leave you breathless and eager for more from Gabriella Batel.
