My Review

What if the Confederacy had won its independence? It’s a chilling premise that sets the stage for Crossing Day by William A. Glass, a thought-provoking thriller that blends history, social justice, and heart-pounding moments into one gripping read.

The Plot

Set 160 years after the Confederacy's victory, Crossing Day introduces readers to a world where slavery is still the backbone of the Southern economy. The story follows Ryan Walters and his high school friends in Huntsville, Alabama. At first glance, their lives seem typical—sports, social media, and hanging out at Jaybird’s Drive-In.

But everything changes when they meet Mish, a young slave girl working as a server at the drive-in. As their friendship deepens, Mish’s life takes a terrifying turn when she is sold to a predatory older man. This event forces Ryan and his friends to confront the brutal reality of their world, and they hatch a dangerous plan to help Mish escape.

Will their courage be enough to defy a society built on injustice, or will the cost of freedom be too high?

What Worked for Me

The premise of Crossing Day is undeniably compelling. Alternate history stories often carry the risk of feeling far-fetched, but Glass crafts a world that feels disturbingly plausible. The casual acceptance of slavery in this society mirrors the willful ignorance seen throughout history, adding a layer of authenticity to the narrative.

Another strong point is the characters. Ryan and his friends are relatable and flawed, making their journey from bystanders to risk-takers feel genuine. Mish’s story is heart-wrenching, and her bravery is inspiring and gut-wrenching.

When the action finally kicks in, the story delivers. The tension builds steadily, and the stakes feel real. I couldn't stop turning the pages once the escape plan was set in motion.

What Didn’t Work for Me

While the book ultimately captured my attention, the pacing in the first third of the story was slow. Glass spends a lot of time establishing the world and characters, which, while necessary, dragged in places. I found myself waiting for the story to truly begin. However, once Mish’s fate becomes clear, the narrative picks up speed and becomes impossible to put down.

Final Thoughts

Crossing Day is a story that lingers in your mind long after the final page. It’s more than a thriller; it’s a sobering exploration of morality, privilege, and courage in the face of systemic injustice. Though it starts slow, the payoff is worth the patience.

If you enjoy alternate history with a social justice twist, Crossing Day deserves a spot on your reading list.

About the book:

It's been one hundred and sixty years since the Confederacy won its independence at the Battle of Altamaha Crossing. Slaves of African descent still perform most of the work in the South. This seems normal to Ryan Walters and his friends who attend high school in Huntsville, Alabama. Like teens everywhere, they enjoy sharing videos, playing sports, and hanging out with friends.

Jaybird's Drive-In is a favorite gathering place for the teenagers. There, they befriend Mish, a slave girl who works as a server. When the restaurant’s owner sells Mish to a dirty old man, Ryan and his friends awaken to the injustice around them. Despite the danger, they decide to help Mish escape. Will they succeed?
