My Review

⭐⭐⭐⭐

"The Deadly Daylight" by Ash Harrier is a charming middle-grade mystery that weaves themes of friendship and courage into a cute yet dark narrative. Set in a funeral home where 12-year-old Alice England works alongside her father, the story follows Alice's unique ability to communicate with the dead. Despite being taunted by her peers as "Alice in Zombieland," Alice finds solace in the stories the deceased share with her.

The plot thickens when Alice encounters George Devenish, a man who died under suspicious circumstances due to a rare sunlight allergy. Convinced of foul play, Alice embarks on a quest for justice, with George's niece "Violet the Vampire" and the enigmatic Cal as her unexpected allies. As the trio delves deeper into the mystery, Alice grapples with the challenges of forming genuine friendships while unraveling the truth behind George's death.

Harrier's narrative is brimming with clever humor and twisty clues, reminiscent of classic mystery tales like Nancy Drew. The author masterfully captures the essence of misfit characters finding strength in each other and courage in pursuing the truth. The dynamics between Alice, Violet, and Cal add depth to the storyline, highlighting the complexities of friendship and loyalty.

While "The Deadly Daylight" offers an engaging and entertaining read, some readers may find themselves wishing for more exploration of the story's setting. At times, the intricacies of the funeral home environment could have been further developed to enhance the overall atmosphere of the novel.

Overall, "The Deadly Daylight" is a delightful blend of darkness and quirkiness that will appeal to fans of cozy mysteries. Ash Harrier's debut novel is a testament to the power of friendship and the resilience of young protagonists in the face of adversity. With its endearing characters and intriguing plot twists, this book is sure to captivate readers of all ages.
