My Review:

⭐⭐⭐1/2

In the enchanting world of middle-grade literature, Michael Thomas Perone's "Déjà View" stands out as a compelling coming-of-age tale with a sci-fi twist. Twelve-year-old Bobby Dalton, reluctant to bid farewell to his carefree childhood, finds himself thrust into an unexpected adventure when his Seventh-Grade class buries a time capsule, marking the end of the 1980s.

Bobby, alongside his steadfast companions Joe and Max, has always relied on the imaginative refuge of childhood games to navigate life's challenges. However, the trio's world takes a mysterious turn as Bobby begins to experience haunting visions—ghostly doppelgangers of himself, his friends, and others. Coined as "déjà view," these apparitions raise questions that challenge the boundaries between reality and imagination.

Perone's narrative brilliantly unfolds, exploring Bobby's struggle to grapple with these surreal visions. The author introduces readers to a darkly funny coming-of-age dramedy, cranked up to eleven with a sci-fi element that adds an extra layer of intrigue. As Bobby attempts to decipher the meaning behind these visions, the novel transforms into a pulse-pounding thrill ride, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.

The deliberate pacing in the initial chapters allows readers to immerse themselves in the late 80s setting, a masterstroke that adds a nostalgic touch to the narrative. I appreciated how the author's choice of this era brought back fond memories, enhancing the overall reading experience.

"Déjà View" not only excels in delivering an enthralling adventure but also delves into profound themes. It serves as a haunting portrait of paranoia, mental illness, and the poignant sadness that accompanies the inevitable journey of growing up. Perone's ability to seamlessly weave these elements into a middle-grade narrative showcases the depth and versatility of his storytelling.

While the novel may test the patience of readers eager for immediate time-travel thrills, the payoff is undeniably worth it. The author's exploration of universal themes, coupled with memorable characters and a unique twist on the coming-of-age genre, makes "Déjà View" an excellent choice for young readers and educators alike. This book not only offers a gripping tale of time travel but also provides a platform for discussions on friendship, decision-making, and the complexities of adolescence.
